From a very young age, Lukas Wörle had an intense connection with the mountains. He spent a significant amount of time exploring the diverse corners of the Alps, whether it was on rock, ice, snow, or even in the air with his paraglider. Inspired by the stories and images from his father, Alfred Wörle, who had successfully climbed heights of up to 7500 meters on two expeditions in Nepal in 1989 and 1991, Lukas developed a deep desire to explore the highest peaks of the world.
The idea of conquering an 8000-meter peak without supplemental oxygen or high-altitude porters and then paragliding from the summit was born. In 2022, Lukas Wörle set out on an expedition to Gasherbrum II. During his attempt to reach the summit from Camp 2 in adverse weather conditions, Lukas had to turn back at 7000 meters due to a snowstorm.
With valuable insights gained from the first expedition, it became clear that another attempt in 2023 was necessary. Lukas Wörle, along with his father Alfred and brother Vincent, embarked on a journey to Broad Peak, standing at an impressive 8047 meters. During his summit push, Lukas encountered a critically ill Pakistani high-altitude porter at an elevation of over 8000 meters. Lukas took on the responsibility of rescuing the porter, singlehandedly transporting him from over 8000 meters down to 7800 meters, with further assistance provided by an American colleague. This heroic effort saved the life of the high-altitude porter. During a second attempt a week later, Lukas, affected by extreme exhaustion, had to turn back at 7700 meters. However, he managed to launch his paraglider at 7000 meters and sail down to the base camp.
In addition to many smaller projects in the Alps and in the Karakorum, notable successes in 2023 include the rescue of a Pakistani high altitude porter in the death zone above 8000m and a week later a paraglider launch at 7000m.
